Paranormal
Jenna Black offers a new twist in the
paranormal genre in the second installment of the Morgan
Kingsley series. Exorcist Morgan Kingsley lives in a
world where demons are a part of every day life. She has
a profound dislike of demons, and she is unlucky enough
to have been possessed by Lugh, king of the demon realm.
For unknown reasons, Lugh is unable to take control of
Morgan's body, and the only time she can interact with
him is in her dreams. When one of Lugh's supporters
informs Morgan of a secret in her mother's past that may
explain why Morgan is immune to possession, Morgan is
stunned. Another shock is delivered when Morgan's
brother, Andy awakes after considerable time in a
demon-induced coma. Determined to keep her parents from
convincing Andy to volunteer for possession (again),
Morgan convinces Andy to go home with her to convalesce.
When Morgan learns that she is being pursued by Der
Jager, a demon bounty hunter. Making an uneasy alliance
with the frightening Adam--a demon who has an "ends
justifies the means" attitude, Dominic, ex-boyfriend
Brian, and handsome Lugh, Morgan is forced to face her
fears and the painful past.
THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is fast-paced, disturbing, and
completely unique; the strange universe Ms. Black has
created is one in which demons are called to possess
humans who volunteer for the honor. The mercurial and
dual nature of demons is central to the plot, and
readers should be warned that violence is
integral—although much of it is implied. The action
sequences are intense, and the emotional interactions
between Morgan and those she loves are frequently
painful to read; it's rare that a paranormal novel can
touch the reader on such a personal level. Morgan is a
tortured heroine, and she inspires sympathy.
Conservative readers should also be aware that the novel
refers to elements of BDSM and homosexuality. THE DEVIL
YOU KNOW is the second in a series, and readers will
greatly benefit from having read the previous novel, THE
DEVIL INSIDE. Although I have not read the first in the
series, I've already ordered it from my favorite online
bookstore! THE DEVIL YOU KNOW is sure to keep you
reading late into the night!
