| The second
novel in this mystery series picks up right where SOFIE METROLOPIS
left off. Sofie, a private investigator in her uncle’s
business in
Astoria
,
Queens
, is still learning the trade and still recovering from her broken
engagement and near marriage. There are lots of cases to be
concerned with including the local dry cleaner whose disappearance
looks mob connected, and Tony DiPiazza, a darkly handsome
suspicious character who warns Sofie to stay out of his business.
On top of all this, Sofie’s mother is convinced that her father
is having an affair. Sofie is shocked but determined to
discover the truth—about everything.
Woven into
every single page of this delightful novel is Greek-American
culture. Sofie’s family values, her relationships with her
relatives, the food they eat, the ways they communicate—all
relates to their basic Greek-American heritage. This spices
up the book and gives it a superb texture and flavor.
On top of
the ethnicity is Sofie. Her insecurities, her life goals,
her zaniness, and the nuttiness that seems to follow her life are
all laid out for readers to follow. I especially liked her
Jack Russell terrier that she acquired in the first novel.
He plays a pivotal role in this novel.
I’m sure
that Tori Carrington plans on many additional books involving
Sofie Metropolis. Readers are teased from page to page by
the hunky and irresistible Jake Porter, introduced in the last
book as an Australian bounty hunter. In this latest offering
it seems like Jake is probably more connected to
somebody given that he regularly rescues Sofie from
numerous tight situations. She is hot for this guy and he
keeps holding her off…..even through his obvious attraction.
This makes for some fine sexual tension.
I think
Sofie has found her voice with this second novel and I for one
cannot wait to read the third book in the series. You
can’t help but love this endearing young woman as she tries to
reconcile her family, her work life, and her love life, while
working as a PI. I guarantee you some hilarious laugh out
loud moments as well as some scary ones in this terrific mystery
by Tori Carrington. The recipes at the back of the book look
delicious!
