Hannah Williams was eager, as other
small town youngsters, to leave behind the Sugar Creek
in Illinois. Once she finished high school, she shook
the dust off her feet and set sail for the blue waters
and sunny skies of California. Living the corporate life
she is happy with her best friend Mac and the occasional
visits to her home town. However, her sister Dilly does
the unthinkable and goes to prison. Realizing that she
had been neglectful in leaving her in the rural town,
she vows to do all she can to help her. And if that
includes moving back to the town she left behind, then
that is what she will do.
So she resigns from her job, packs up her belongings,
leaves her friend Mac, returns to the town and buys a
small house for her sister and herself. But Hannah's
plans to take care of her sister are all going haywire.
Dilly has found God and with it a new -found strength
that gives her an air of confidence that she did not
have before. And she does not seem to want to be taken
care of. She is going about her life trying to get
custody of her 10-year old daughter, trying to find a
job and trying to right her past wrongs. Will Hannah and
Dilly come to an understanding?
In this contemporary novel, Ms. Lang explores the ties
of family and the bond between sisters. A poignant novel
about second chances and forgiveness, this novel will
touch many hearts. When reading the story I was rooting
for both sisters as they ironed out their differences
and attempted to make the best of the second chance they
had been given. The novel is heart-wrenching as readers
are afforded with a very moving portrayal of a mother's
yearning for her child. The characters are full of life
and portrayed as humans that I was able to relate to.
The only thing that could be a potential problem for
some readers is the fact that the story is told from
both Hannah's and Dilly's perspective. Each chapter
switches between the two characters with the story told
from the first person point of view. Hence, fans of
books-that-alternate-perspective will not enjoy this
book. Otherwise this is a lovely novel that is sure to
stay with you for a long time!
