Historical
It is so much fun to read and review any
book written by the talented and gracious Teresa
Medeiros. This latest offering just furthers my view
that she is incapable of writing a bad book! Readers are
introduced to Catriona Kincaid, a lovely Scottish girl,
whose parents have been killed by British
redcoats necessitating her being sent to live with her
proper uncle in London just before adolescence.
There's a bit of a Cinderella story going on here as
Catriona tries to grow up with a female cousin who is
cruel and mean, a seemingly indifferent aunt and uncle,
and the general sense that she "doesn't fit".
The book begins in the most enticing manner, with
Catriona being the unwitting witness to her cousin's
liaison with a young naval officer, Sir Simon Wescott.
When she unceremoniously falls out of the loft and
interrupts their intimacy, her cousin is furious, but
Simon is intrigued by the beautiful young girl with a
yellow kitten.
Fast forward several years and you encounter Catriona,
still feeling as if she needs to be back in the
highlands, longing for her older brother, willing to go
to great lengths to leave London. When she finds
Simon in a debtor's prison she makes a bold decision
about his future and hers. To say more would be to give
it away.
Trust me when I say you will love Catriona. She is a
brave, interesting character who engages in a
sparkling dialogue with the handsome but flawed Simon.
They each bring their own characters to the mix and the
result is delightful. Of special delight is Catriona's
large cat. Robert the Bruce is a
significant character in this book, as he accompanies
Catriona on her adventures.
Once more Teresa Medeiros delivers up a sparkling story
set in Victorian England, filled with fascinating
characters sure to delight. I don't know how Ms.
Medeiros thinks up these wonderful stories. Happily,
readers can look forward to the next book, about
Catriona's brother. SOME LIKE IT WILD is due out in 2009
and I will be reading this one for sure.
This is a very good book meant to be consumed in one
big, delicious gulp!
