Alison Paige gives the reader an interesting story in SOUL OF THE SEA. Short erotica/romantica stories that capture both an interesting plot and some character development are not easy things to do.

Marina is a mermaid and disregards the traditional ideals of her people. She is a free spirit and does not necessarily believe that the Lady of the Sea has chosen just one mate for each person. She wants to live life to the fullest and not be tied down to just one merman. She DOES however want to "save" her friend Samson from abandoning his life to the Lady of the Sea, doomed to roam the waters forever searching for the Lady.

Michael Sandbar has never felt a part of his world. The water has always called to him and to the males in his family. Most of his male ancestors have died young with an obsession with the ocean. His father caught what he thought was a mermaid in a picture and now Michael lives his life on the water always searching. When he plucks an oyster from the ocean floor that has a large pearl ensconced with in it, he upsets the merpeople below. Marina is convinced that the "stolen" pearl is Samson's ticket to staying with his people. She goes hunting for the land-dweller who dares to plunder her world.

So, this is how Marina and Michael meet. They have many obstacles to overcome, but true love will always triumph…right? This is a cute story that I truly enjoyed reading. I thought that there were some rough parts and some transitions in the writing that could have been smoother or edited better, but those were minor blips in my overall enjoyment of SOUL OF THE SEA. Marina, like her more famous counterpart Ariel, is attracted to the land-dwellers and will defy her father to get what she wants. A bit spoiled and head strong, but that is what makes her interesting.
