Every family has secrets that could one
day cause harm to their image or to others. Hallie Owens
finds herself caught between the battle of wills between
Cleo Mitchell and her family. Hallie is a columnist that
has worked hard to get her own column in a Detroit
newspaper and because of Cleo's need to expose the man
that raped her years ago Hallie could lose everything.
Before she has a chance to get an understanding of
everything that has happened in the past, Hallie finds
herself being charmed by Cleo's grandfather and wrapped
in the arms of her father, Mitch. The elder Mitchell's
only concern is for the family's history to be written
and preserved for all future generations and for his
son's quest for political office. Cleo wants the man
that raped her years ago found guilty for a recent rape
and murder charge, and that's Hallie's real reason for
coming to Texas. And Mitch just works hard to please
everyone except himself.
Hallie has her work cut out for her as she makes
decisions that will affect everyone's life forever. In
the short time she has been in Texas she has gotten to
know a little more about Cleo and the unstable state of
her mind, including her apparent hatred for her father.
Hallie has also become very fond of the senior Mitchell
and knows that his acts are not selfish as he manages to
touch a part of her heart that she has never shared with
anyone. And finally there is Mitch, Cleo's father that
has taught her how to love again after the tragic death
of her husband. With everything she has found out about
the Mitchells, Hallie decides that in order to do
justice to the family's book she must share some of what
she knows with the grandfather. The events that happen
after that one conversation sets the wheels in motion
that will change everyone's life forever.
Ms. Walker has written a story filled with secrets,
confessions, and jealousy that takes you into what can
truly happen when secrets are held too long. You
instantly feel something for the characters as each
plays an important role in making the story feel real.
This book leaves readers with the feeling that there are
possibly more secrets in the Mitchell family that are
yet to be told.
